Slavery Is a Choice confronts one of America’s most painful chapters with a question few are willing to entertain: what role does human agency play even under systems designed to deny it? Directed by Vince Everett Ellison, the documentary moves through history, personal memory and stories of resistance to examine the choices people make when confronted with oppression.
From Black soldiers who fought for liberty to enslaved men and women who resisted bondage, escaped, fought back or pursued new lives after emancipation, the film asks viewers to reconsider the relationship between circumstance and choice. Rather than minimizing the brutality of slavery, Slavery Is a Choice centers the enduring human struggle for dignity, courage and freedom - in body, mind and spirit.
